Attendees of the 3rd Middle East Mobility & Wireless Broadband Summit today received a firsthand perspective on Sun Microsystems’ vision for RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) – what the company calls a ‘disruptive’ technology that enables the ‘Internet of things’ rather than computers.

“While RFID is still very much just a concept in the Middle East and North Africa, the aspirations of this region to become a logistical hub and its appetite for new technology mean that RFID could conceivably take hold here at a faster pace than in some more developed markets,” said Graham Porter, Sun Microsystems’ marketing manager for MENA.

“Just as the Internet is a vast network of connected computers, so RFID can connect a universe of things to each other by recognizing and tracking objects, delivering tremendous benefits for the distribution and logistics industries, but also for inventory-heavy sectors that require a great deal of ‘track and trace,’ such as retail and even pharmaceuticals,” Porter added.

Sun and its partner Netlink highlighted the benefits of their emerging RFID software and hardware solutions during the RFID-specific track of the two-day event in Dubai.  Porter’s presentation also highlighted Sun’s RFID research facility in the US, where customers from around the world can test their RFID scenarios before deploying new technology.
