Elite British troops, already in Afghanistan, have been involved in a minor clash with Taliban soldiers, the Sunday Times reported. There was no immediate confirmation from the defense ministry.

SAS (Special Air Service) soldiers were fired on by the Taliban late Friday, but nobody was hurt, military sources told the Sunday Times web site, adding that the gunfire had been "more symbolic than directed."

The sources suggested that a small SAS team had "spooked" Taliban soldiers near Kabul, who had fired indiscriminately before fleeing.

The Ministry of Defense would not confirm the report. "We do not comment on matters concerning the SAS," said a spokeswoman.

SAS troopers, together with members of the British intelligence service, are working with the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance in Afghanistan in the search for Osama Bin Laden, the number one suspect behind the suicide hijacker attacks on America on September 11 which killed thousands, according to the Sunday Times -- LONDON (AFP)
