A ceiling collapsed in a supermarket crowded with Christmas shoppers in the Latvian capital of Riga Friday afternoon, killing one woman and injuring four people.

Firefighters had found the dead body of a 24-year-old woman under the debris in Essa supermarket in central Riga, state police spokesman Krists Leiskalns told the Baltic News Service (BNS).

Workers said the ceiling collapsed with relatively little noise, then the whole shop filled with dust in a second, the alarm went off and cash registers started beeping.

Regardless of the fact that people were injured in the accident no screams or cries for help were heard, workers told BNS.

Three injured women and one man were taken to the hospital but one of the women was treated and immediately released.

The man had a brain concussion, one of the women was serious condition while the other woman might be allowed to go home later Friday, hospital director Janis Ozols told BNS.

Police believe either the building's load-bearing beams were damaged or a pile of construction waste in one of the upper floors undergoing renovation fell through the ceiling all the way down to the supermarket on the ground floor -- RIGA (AFP)
