Tehran remains by far the cheapest city in the world with a cost of living index almost a quarter of that of London, the most expensive EU capital, according to a new survey published by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) on Tuesday.

The Iranian capital is less expensive than 130 other cities surveyed in the biannual report, with a rating of 26, nearly 50 percent less than the second cheapest city, Belgrade, said the survey, cited by the official Iranian news agency, IRNA.

The worldwide cost of living index, which compares prices and products, aims to provide companies with an independent guide to calculate allowances for executives and their families being sent overseas.

It is based upon a rating of 100 for London, which retains its place as the sixth most expensive city in the world, and the most costly in the 15-member EU, said IRNA.

Osaka, Kobe and Tokyo are listed as the costly cities, while New York is placed seventh, Paris 14th, Vienna 22nd and Moscow 34th.

In the Middle East, Amman is the most expensive capital, 40th in the world survey, ahead of Dubai in 53rd, Abu Dhabi 59th, Cairo 64th and Riyadh 66th, the same ranking as Rome, said the survey – Albawaba.com
