Philippine authorities have arrested a suspect for a series of deadly bomb blasts across Manila on Saturday, Defense Secretary Orlando Mercado said.
Police detained an unidentified suspect "in the Makati area," he said over DZMM radio, referring to the financial district where a policeman was killed while trying to disarm an explosive device wrapped in a Christmas package. Another policeman was seriously injured.
Mercado said the suspect is under interrogation and "that's as much as we can say."
He added that the suspect was "carrying lengths of wire."
Explosions ripped open a bus and a train coach around noon in the Philippine capital. A car bomb also exploded at Manila airport while another blast tore across a park near the US embassy.
Police said the blasts killed at least 11 people and left more than 70 others injured.
Police said the Makati explosive was planted at the side of the Dusit Hotel. A group of child scavengers found the package and carried it across the street to be opened at an abandoned gasoline station.
Police ordnance experts arrived at the area just after the children had torn off the Christmas wrapping -- MANILA (AFP)
