Switzerland expressed its condolences to Syria Sunday over the death of President Hafez Assad, saying he had played a "very important role".
"Switzerland hopes now that the will for peace in the Middle East shown by President Assad is now continued and realized by his successor," foreign ministry spokesman Livio Zanolari said.
"The president was a personality who played a very important role for several years," he added.
Swiss President Adolf Ogi has sent a message of condolence to the family of President Assad as well as the government and the Syrian people.
Assad came to Geneva several times to meet US presidents. The last summit with President Bill Clinton took place in March - BERN (AFP)
