A Syrian suspect arrested earlier this week by Lebanese authorities over the possession of arms and explosives is a member of Syrian Intelligence, a security source told The Daily Star Saturday.
The General Directorate of Lebanon’s State Security State said Friday it arrested two Syrians and a Palestinian in the West Bekaa Valley over the possession of arms and 80 kilograms of explosives, rocket-propelled grenades, surveillance equipment, listening devices, transmitters and wireless receivers.
The Palestinian was identified by his initials Y.B. and the Syrians H.A and Z.T. The second Syrian also holds the Lebanese nationality.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said H.A. was a member of Syrian Intelligence but did not identify his rank in the security agency.
The other two suspects also belong to groups loyal to the regime in Damascus, the source said.
Z. T. belongs to the Syrian Socialist Nationalist Party, a Lebanese political group that backs President Bashar Assad while Y.B. is a member of Fatah al-Intifada, a pro-Assad Palestinian group based in Lebanon, the source said.
The statement from the General Directorate of State Security said the Lebanese agency was still looking for other suspects in the case and investigating the detainees.
