Syria's security services chief Ali Mamlouk has appeared at a meeting between President Bashar al-Assad and an Iranian official Wednesday after claims the leader was placed on house arrest, AFP reported.
Syrian state news SANA reported on Mamlouk's attendance at the meeting with Alaedin Boroujerdi, head of the Iranian parliament's national security and foreign policy committee. According to AFP it's unusual for Syrian media to report on Mamlouk's activities, suggesting it was a direct refute to claims of his arrest.
Britain's The Telegraph had reported two days earlier that Mamlouk had been placed under house arrest over allegedly conspiring to carry out a coup. In the report sources had said Assad's key associates had increasingly been "turning on each other."
Two intelligence officials were fired by Assad after they exchanged blows in an argument in late March.
