Syrian warplanes carried out at least three airstrikes on the outskirts of Arsal in east Lebanon Friday, killing a 12-year-old boy and wounding three family members, security sources told The Daily Star.

The sources said the jets fired at least three missiles at the road linking the towns of Zamarani and Ajram, with one of them hitting a pickup truck carrying Syrian workers.

The sources identified the fatality as Ayham Rakan Hammoud, 12. They said his brother Adham, 14, and their father, Rakan, 45, were among the wounded.

The third casualty was identified as Ali Hammoud Bakr, 40.

The sources said the family was on its way to harvest cherries when their vehicle received a direct hit.

The Syrian regime has carried out air raids around Arsal a number of times over the last year, in what it says is an attempt to stop rebels using the porous border area from moving back and forth between the two countries. Arsal is hosting thousands of refugees from the more than 3-year-old civil war raging in Syria.
