Syrian caretaker president Abdel Halim Khaddam Sunday named Bashar Assad commander in chief of the armed forces after promoting him from colonel to general, Khaddam's office said in a statement.
Earlier Sunday, the Pan-National Leadership of the Baath ruling party decided to nominate Assad’s son as president after the same decision was taken Saturday by the Regional Leadership.
Sources here told Albawaba.com that the candidacy will be put to vote at the party’s first Congress in 15 years, scheduled for July 15th.
The promotions for the 34-year-old son and heir apparent of the late Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, who died Saturday, were made in two decrees issued by Khaddam, his office said, quoted by AFP.
