A US strike against Iraq will "strengthen" terrorism, the Syrian government newspaper Tishreen wrote Tuesday, in a comment on US Vice President Dick Cheney's Middle East tour.
"Several countries have warned the United States against the dangers of sporadic wars that will not help the cause of the fight against terrorism, but on the contrary, will strengthen the terrorist groups by giving them justification to keep up their activities," said Tishreen.
"The Arab states have stated ahead of Cheney's tour their strong opposition to any military action against Iraq which has nothing to do with the September 11 attacks, according to the American themselves," it added.
The Arab states' "cause of worry" is the "Zionist aggression" against Palestinians and not Iraq, Tishreen stressed, according to AFP.
Meanwhile, another government newspaper, Ath-Thawra, praised the declaration issued on the Middle East by the European Union (EU) summit in Barcelona on Saturday.
The newspaper said the statement reflected the EU's "determination" to play a role in the region with the aim of reaching a comprehensive peace based on the withdrawal of Israel from the Arab lands seized in 1967. (Albawaba.com)
