Syrian state-run media accused Washington on Saturday of aiming, through its standoff with Iraq, to remodel the Middle East, based on US economic domination and further Israeli occupation of Arab territories.

"Since the beginning of the Iraq crisis, there has been political and military coordination between the United States and Israel to prepare, execute and reap the fruits, of this war," the Tishrin newspaper said.

The strategy adopted by Washington, the official paper added, is to set up a "new American colonialism."

"The strategy of the United States is based on the control of Iraqi and Gulf oil resources, military support to Israel to pursue its expansion program, and the annihilation of the economies of the Arab world to force it to go along with this new American colonialism."

The "United States and Israel have common interests in the occupation (of Arab lands) and economic hegemony, even if US Secretary of State Colin Powell did not say so explicitly," Tishrin added.

In the meantime, another daily, Ath-Thawra, said, "The United States wants to impose its logic of weakening Europe economically and politically ... and the United Nations, and supporting the Israeli solution in the (Arab-Israeli) conflict." (Albawaba.com)
