Syrian President Bashar Assad stressed during talks Wednesday with Jordanian Foreign Minister Abd Ilah Al Khatib the need to reactivate Arab solidarity and intensify inter-Arab contacts, a presidential spokesman said, cited by Reuters.
He said the talks between Assad and Khatib, who arrived earlier in the day, also covered bilateral issues.
Khatib delivered a message to Assad from Jordan's King Abdullah, said the official Jordanian news agency, Petra.
"The talks dealt with the situation in the region and the necessity of reactivating Arab solidarity and intensifying Arab contacts," an official told Petra.
Syrian Foreign Minister Farouq Al Shara, who held separate talks with Khatib following the meeting with Assad, declined to comment on Damascus' position regarding a Jordanian-Egyptian initiative to end violence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and resume the Palestinian-Israeli peace talks.
"Syria supports any initiative which is based on United Nations resolutions and the terms of reference of the Arab-Israeli peace conference [which opened in Madrid in 1991]," Shara said.
Shara, meanwhile, commended bilateral cooperation between Jordan and Syria.
“Cooperation between the two countries is good and continuing and the Joint Jordanian-Syrian Committee will convene soon,” Shara said.
For his part Khatib described his talks with Assad as "excellent." – Albawaba.com
