FIve children and four other civilians were killed Sunday when a Syrian regime airstrike hit a school in the northern city of Aleppo, AFP reported.

The Syrian Observatory said the civilians were three female teachers and one man, adding the death toll would likely rise due to a number of serious injuries.

In a separate airstrike, another child was also killed in a rebel-held neighborhood in east Aleppo, the monitor said.

The casualties followed clashes between regime and opposition forces in the city a day earlier, killing 35 people.

Several schools have closed because of the conflict, while other classes are being held in basements.
