Two Syrians suspected of spying have been arrested in Germany, a German legal spokesman has told the weekly Focus magazine in an interview to be published Monday.
Frauke-Katrin Scheuten, a spokesman for the German federal court, told the magazine that two identified only as Ahmad "I", 49, head interpreter at the Syrian embassy in Bonn, and Ahmad al-"Y", a political science student in the western German city of Mainz, were arrested Wednesday.
Al-"Y" is suspected of spying on opponents of the Syrian regime currently living in Germany and of attempting to recruit students in various cities in the west and centre of the country to work for the Syrian secret services. (AFP, MUNICH)
