Jenny Thompson broke her eight-year-old American record in the 100m freestyle Friday, leading a set of impressive finishes at the Janet Evans Invitational swim meet.

Thompson won in 54.27 seconds, lowering the United States mark of 54.48 she set in March of 1992. Compatriot Dara Torres was second in 54.47, with Olympic champion Amy Van Dyken third in 55.76. Thompson's time was .47 off the world record set by Dutch star Inge de Bruijn on May 29 of this year. Three meet records were also set, two of them to Latin American swim stars. Brazil's Gustavo Borges won the 100m freestyle in 50.00, matching the meet mark set by Australia's Matt Klim in 1997.

Costa Rica's Claudia Poll won the 400 freestyle in 4:09.04 to break the meet mark of 4:11.94 set by the event's namesake, 1988 Olympic star Janet Evans, in 1995.

American Tom Malchow set the third meet record of the session, winning the 200m butterfly in 1:55.84 to topple the old mark of 1:58.75 set by Aussie Scott Goodman in 1997 - (AFP)
