Three people are missing after two chalets in southern Switzerland were swept away when a high pressure waterpipe to a hydro-electric factory burst, police said Wednesday.

Several farm buildings were also carried away in the mudslide near the village of Nendaz in the canton of Valais late Tuesday.

The mudslide severed a road linking the town of Sion to Riddes, situated about 20 kilometers (12 miles) northeast of Martigny, and the river Rhne.

Police said several helicopters had flown over the region to assess the damage, while doctors, ambulances, dogs, guides and police were helping in the rescue effort -- SION (AFP)
