Three people have died as a boat carrying 73 migrants capsized near the northwestern coast of Turkey on Monday, the Turkish coast guard said.

The group, composed of Afghans and Syrian, had sailed from the Ayvacik coast of Canakkale province to reach the nearby Greek island of Lesbos when their boat sank.

Three people, including one woman, drowned.

The Aegean Sea is one of the most frequently used routes for migrants trying to reach EU countries.

In the first five months of 2015, over 42,000 people arrived by sea to Greece, most of them refugees, according to the United Nations (UN) Refugee Agency.
