A top Iranian military official on Tuesday warned the U.S. that any threats against his country would be met with an “unimaginable response”.
The warning comes two days after U.S. President Donald Trump, addressing Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani, tweeted: “Never, ever threaten the U.S. again or you will suffer consequences the likes of which few throughout history have ever suffered before.”
In a Tuesday statement, Iranian Military Chief-of-Staff Mohammad Bakiri upped the ante, pointing out that all U.S. military bases in the region were “within range” of a potential Iranian attack.
“The enemies, whose deployments and interests are within range, should not pull the lion’s tail, lest they face an unimaginable response from Iran,” Bakiri said.
Tension has steadily mounted between the two countries since May, when Trump unilaterally withdrew the U.S. from a landmark 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and the P5+1 group of nations (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany).
