The Islamic State is training militants to fly three captured fighter jets in Syria, according to a London-based monitoring group, Reuters reports Friday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Iraqi pilots were training IS militants how to fly MiG 21 or MiG 23 jet models, believed to be captured from the Syrian regime.

Rami, Abdulrahman, head of the activist group, said: "They have trainers, Iraqi officers who were pilots for (former Iraqi president) Saddam Hussein.

"People saw the flights, they went up many times from the airport and they are flying in the skies outside the airport and coming back," he added.

Pro-IS affiliated Twitter accounts have posted images of captured jets in parts of Syria, but were deemed unusable by military experts, according to Reuters.
