Trend Micro Incorporated (TSE: 4704; Nasdaq: TMIC), a leader in network antivirus and Internet content security, today announced that in a recent independent anti-spam benchmark test, multi-tiered anti-spam from Trend Micro achieved the highest catch rate of 97.36 percent and a competitive low false positive rate when compared to several popular anti-spam solutions.

The anti-spam tests were conducted by an independent testing agency, Opus One, and the vendor solutions tested included anti-spam engines as well as reputation services if provided by the vendor.

Opus One tested the Trend Micro anti-spam composite engine and Trend Micro Email Reputation.  The robust anti-spam engine integrates multiple anti-spam techniques to stop threats before they reach the inbox. Patent-pending image spam detection technology, embedded URL reputation, and other cutting-edge approaches protect against emerging spam attacks. Keeping these threats out of the inbox increases employee productivity and safeguards employees from falling victim to spam threats blended with malware and phishing.

Trend Micro Email Reputation was tested as part of the Trend Micro multi-tiered anti-spam solution.  Reputation services have become critical in the fight against spam, blocking senders of email threats without administrators having to scan the content of the mail. Trend Micro Email Reputation uses one of the world’s largest reputation databases with information on over 1.6 billion IP addresses and a dynamic reputation service that identifies new spam sources in real time, stopping threats when they first emerge. Trend Micro Email Reputation takes advantage of over a decade of reputation expertise to keep threats off the network, not just out of the inbox, preserving valuable network resources.

This effective multi-tiered anti-spam is offered in Trend Micro gateway anti-spam solutions for Small, Medium, and Enterprise business.  Trend Micro Email Reputation is also sold as a standalone service, Trend Micro Email Reputation Services, which can be used as a first line of defense to complement other content security products.  In the anti-spam tests, Opus One also tested Trend Micro’s standalone Email Reputation Services as part of a selection of standalone reputation services, and the Trend Micro solution had the highest catch rate of the tested reputation services at 72.7 percent.  Trend Micro is an industry leader in anti-spam effectiveness for both its gateway anti-spam solution and its standalone reputation service.

“Trend Micro is very pleased with the recognition these benchmark results provide. The company has worked hard and focused on providing customers a superior layered and multi-tiered spam defense and the Opus One report endorses these efforts,” said Justin Doo, Managing Director, Trend Micro Middle East/North Africa.

“Spam has increased in both volume and sophistication. Our anti-spam solutions are evolving in order to efficiently mitigate the threat posed by spam.  This test proves that Trend Micro anti-spam solutions are ahead of the pack, successfully protecting enterprises around the globe,” he added.

Trend Micro strategically applies its anti-spam technologies at different network points to maximize overall layered protection, including mail server and gateway anti-spam as well as standalone reputation services.  This protection is provided in a variety of Trend Micro solutions to meet the varying needs of organizations, including messaging security solutions, complete gateway security for Web and email protection, as well as comprehensive network security suites.

In an effort to help raise awareness regarding the evolution of spam and anti-spam techniques, Trend Micro will be hosting a Webinar from North America entitled “Innovative Spam Defense” taking place on May 10, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. PDT.
