ALBAWABA- U.S. President Donald Trump announced that National Guard troops would be withdrawn from Chicago, Los Angeles, and Portland, ending a months-long federal deployment to three major U.S. cities.

In a social media statement, Trump credited the presence of the Guard with reducing crime and restoring order, saying the deployments had helped stabilize the Democrat-led cities. “Crime has been greatly reduced by having these troops in place,” he wrote, adding that the withdrawal would proceed despite what he described as security gains.

The decision marks the conclusion of a controversial intervention launched in June 2025, when Trump ordered National Guard units into several urban centers as part of a nationwide crackdown on violent crime and unrest.

The move was met with resistance from state governors and city officials, who argued that the deployments were unnecessary and infringed on state and local authority over policing.

Local leaders in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Portland welcomed the withdrawal, reiterating that public safety is best managed by local law enforcement agencies rather than federal forces.

They also questioned the administration’s claims that the Guard’s presence led to measurable reductions in crime, noting that independent assessments have produced mixed results.

The deployments sparked legal challenges and political backlash at the time, with Democratic leaders describing them as an overreach of presidential power and a politicization of public safety. Protests accompanied the initial arrival of troops in some cities, heightening tensions between federal authorities and local governments.

The withdrawal reflects a tactical shift in Trump’s second-term domestic security strategy, as the administration balances its law-and-order agenda with mounting pressure from state officials and civil liberties advocates. The White House has not indicated whether similar deployments could be reintroduced in the future.
