ALBAWABA - US President Donald Trump called on Syria to normalize relations with Israel and join the Abraham Accords, AFP reported on Wednesday.

Trump also asked the Syrian Interim President, Ahmed al-Shraa, to take responsibility for the IS detention centres in the country.

Ahead of a larger meeting with GCC leaders and delegations in Riyadh, an American official confirmed that US President Donald Trump met with Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Riyadh on Wednesday.

The meeting took place a day after Trump's announcement that the US is lifting all sanctions on Syria after they were imposed following the civil war that erupted against Bashar Assad and his government, a White House official said.

Yesterday, while the president was speaking at the Saudi-US Economic Forum in Riyadh, Donald Trump announced that his administration has decided to lift sanctions imposed on Syria, following discussions with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
