Two human rights activists were detained in Tunisia on Sunday after embarking on a hunger strike, and one of them was later expelled to his home country of France, the two men said in a statement.
French sociologist Philippe Corcuff and Sadri Khiari, a Tunisian, started a hunger strike on Friday to protest what they claimed were attacks on democracy in the North African country, the statement said.
Corcuff is a member of the human rights organization Attac-France while Khiari is a member of Rally for an International Alternative for Development (RAID), AFP reported.
Police subsequently questioned the two on Sunday and Corcuff was then escorted to the Tunis airport before being placed on an airplane, destined for the French city of Lyon, sources said.
Later on, police released Khiari, after being questioned. (Albawaba.com)
