Turkey arrests 45 Daesh recruits in southeast: report

Over the last three days, security forces in Turkey have detained 45 foreign nationals seeking to cross into Syria to join the Daesh militant group, AFP reported Sunday.

If the arrests are confirmed, they would mark an increase of pressure on the extremist group on behalf of Turkish authorities following the arrest of 21 suspected militants in Istanbul and elsewhere Friday, AFP reported.

The southeastern city of Gaziantep, where the arrests took place, is considered a staging post for Daesh recruits who travel to the city after arriving by plane in Istanbul. From Gaziantep¸ the recruits make the short illegal journey over the border to Syria.

Dogan news agency in Turkey said many of the recruits had also brought their families with them.

Since the rise of Daesh in Syria, Western states have accused Turkey of not doing enough to halt the flow Daesh recruits across its southern border.

Turkey rejects the accusation and in turn has accused Western powers of not playing their part in hosting the 1.8 million refugees from Syria, AFP reported.
