Security forces in Turkey on Monday arrested 232 migrants, most of them Turkish, who were planning to go to Greece, the Anatolia news agency reported.

Eleven suspected people traffickers were also detained in the operation near the Aegean resort town of Marmaris in southwest Turkey, the agency said.

The migrant group, consisting of 198 Turks and 34 Iranians, Iraqis and Palestinians, were preparing to sail to one of the nearby Greek islands, it added.

Turkey is a major transit point for illegal migrants from Asia and the Middle East trying to reach the western part of Europe. (Albawaba.com)
