A European Parliament official says Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government is becoming increasingly authoritarian.
Hannes Swoboda -- an Austrian lawmaker and president of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament -- told Today's Zaman he believes Erdogan's Justice and Development Party has made good moves in the past, but "it has become an Islamo-conservative movement with authoritarian leadership."
Swoboda said he believes the fate of Turkey will come down to the upcoming presidential elections and whether the ruling party can remain united.
"I do not think Erdogan has no control of his party, but he lets people like the deputy express radical ideas to see what the reaction would be," Swododa said.
