Turkey denied a report by Washington Post columnist David Ignatius that claimed it had blown an Israeli spy ring by working closely with Iran.
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu was quoted by the AFP as saying that the allegations were “without any foundation”.
Turkey and Israel have historically enjoyed warm relations. Indeed, many Israelis counted Turkey as among its closest Muslim ally. However, relations between the two countries soured after an Israeli raid on a flotilla of aid bound for Gaza in 2010. Nine Turks were killed in that incident.
However, Davutoglu firmly denied that Turkish intelligence shared information with their Iranian counterparts.
“(Turkish intelligence chief Hakan) Fidan and other security agents report only to the Turkish government and the parliament,” he said.
