Seven of the Turkish Air Force's C-130 military cargo planes will be modernized, enabling them to make intercontinental flights, the Anatolian news agency reported.

The project is meant to contribute to the efforts to reinforce the Turkish defense forces and to increase Turkey's deterrent capacity. Reports say that most of the preparatory work in connection with the C-130 modernization project, which has been on the Defense Industry Under-secretariat agenda for the last few years, has been done. Some 14 firms have been invited to enter the tender to be launched to choose the firm to undertake the project. Reports say that the winning firm will probably be announced by the end of the year. The modernization efforts will be carried out in the Turkish Air Force command facilities in Eskisehir.

All of the 14 firms invited to join the tender are expected to accept the invitation, including Aircraft Industries Limited, Rockwell-Collins, Radom Aviation Systems Limited, Marshall Aerospace, Memphis International Inc., Lockheed Martin Aircraft and Logistics Center, Singapore Technologies Aerospace, Casa, Mae Systems, Thomson-CSE International, Elbit Systems and Elbit Systems Ltd.
