More than 6,000 Syrians have fled fighting between Daesh (ISIS) militants and Kurdish fighters near the Turkish border, the Associated Press reported Wednesday.
Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority said the refugees crossed into Turkey through the border town of Akcakale and were checked for health problems before being sent to a camp or allowed to join relatives in the country.
Fighters of the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) have been closing in on Daesh in Tel Abyad and capturing villages with the help of US-led coalition airstrikes.
Tel Abyad is in a key location because of its proximity to Turkey and the city of Raqqa, a provincial capital controlled by Daesh.
