ALBAWABA - Turkey's defence ministry announced Thursday that Ankara stand next to Syria in its fight against the Kurdish group if Damascus asks the help.
The ministry revealed that Turkey's military is on alert to "support" Syria in its battle with the Syrian Defence Forces (SDF) in the northwestern city of Aleppo.
"Turkey supports Syria's fight against terrorist organisations," the Turkish official told reporters, saying Ankara was "closely monitoring" what is happening in Aleppo. "Should Syria request assistance, Turkey will provide the necessary support," he maintained.
Violent fights erupted this week between the Syrian army and SDF fighters, and a curfew was issued after the two sides failed to reach an agreement to merge the Kurdish fighters into the main Damascus military.
The Chief of Staff of the Syrian Army, Major General Ali al-Naasan, arrived in the city of Aleppo, amid military tensions that the city has been witnessing for two days, especially in the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods.
Today, the Syrian Arab Army's Operations Command announced it would begin targeted operations against positions held by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the Ashrafieh, Sheikh Maqsoud, and Bani Zeid neighborhoods, starting at 1:30 p.m. local time.
On the other side, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar decried the attacks by Syrian army against SDF in Aleppo. In a post on X, he wrote, "Attacks by the Syrian regime's forces against the Kurdish minority in the city of Aleppo - are grave and dangerous. The international community in general, and the West in particular, owes a debt of honor to the Kurds who fought bravely and successfully against ISIS."
