Turkish police have uncovered a plot by a far-left underground group to murder former president Suleyman Demirel and other leading figures, the daily newspaper Sabah reported Tuesday.

A 16-member commando-style unit of the Revolutionary People's Liberation Front was detained in Ankara in a joint operation by police and intelligence services, the daily stated.

The newspaper said the guerrilla group was responsible for a series of attacks on generals and a former minister during the 1990s.

Quoting police sources, the report said the members of the commando had been gathering information on the movements of Justice Minister Hikmet Sami Turk and former interior minister Saadettin Tantan.

The Maoist group was behind a wave of hunger strikes against prison reforms, which began last October and has so far claimed the lives of 30 people -- ANKARA (AFP)
