Nine people were killed when a fire erupted in a cafe patronized largely by students in the western city of Izmir, the Anatolia news agency reported Friday.

It said a short circuit touched off a blaze late Thursday close to the front door that quickly swept through the cafe, forcing patrons towards the back of the establishment to try to escape the flames.

The dead, including five university students, were found by firemen huddled, clutching each other, in the cafe's kitchen, after suffocating from smoke inhalation, the agency added. (Albawaba.com)
