Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in Athens on Monday, where he was expected to discuss the divided island of Cyprus with Greek leaders.
Erdogan is due to meet with Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis and main opposition New Democracy leader Costas Karamanlis.
The trip to neighboring Greece is aimed at securing support before a European Union (EU) summit, expected to take place next month in Copenhagen, at which Ankara hopes to gain membership talks, according to SPA news agency.
Erdogan has repeatedly spoken of the need for a solution to the Cyprus issue. The island has been divided into a Turkish north and a Greek south since the year 1974. (Albawaba.com)
