A Turkish-flagged oil tanker sank in Egypt's Mediterranean port of Alexandria on Sunday, but measures have been taken to prevent a spill, the official MENA news agency reported.

The nine-crew members of the Samurai were all rescued, although three were slightly wounded, they said.

The ship was on the pier, carrying 1,000 tons of petroleum products, when it capsized at around 2:45 p.m. "Oil leaks have appeared in the water, pollution specialists are on the way, " a police official said.

However, a port official quoted by MENA said oil did not spill into the water and measures were taken to prevent such a possibility. MENA added that investigations revealed that the ship capsized because water infiltrated her hull when the oil was being loaded.

The captain of the ship and the loading company blamed each other for the capsizing of the boat, the agency further added. MENA said the Samurai was to deliver the shipment in Libya. (Albawaba.com)
