A Turkish policeman has died from injuries sustained when he was attacked by suspected Islamic extremists, local security forces said Saturday in this city in southeast Turkey.
The two suspected members of Hizbullah opened fire on two policemen following them Friday afternoon in Diyarbakir's Baglar district.
The militants were arrested after a special anti-terror unit was deployed and the neighborhood was put under a brief security blockade, a spokesman for the security forces said.
Last Wednesday, another policeman was killed in Diyarbakir when security forces raided a house believed to be owned by a Hizbullah member.
Turkish authorities say the group, which is not believed to have links with its Lebanese namesake, aims to overthrow the country's strictly secular order and replace it with a hardline Islamic state.
Since January, police have unearthed the bodies of 68 suspected Hizbullah victims in a nationwide clampdown on the group.
