A soldier was killed in a rocket attack on a base in Silopi, a town close to both the Syrian and Iraqi border on southeast Turkey, on Tuesday, the Turkish military said.

The attack on the headquarters of the 172nd Armored Brigade saw another soldier injured when suspected Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants attacked at around 3 p.m. (1200GMT), the Turkish General Staff said in a statement.

Both were taken to Sirnak Military Hospital by helicopter and one later died from his wounds.

In a separate incident on Tuesday, eight members of the PKK and Kurdish Communities Union (KCK) surrendered to security forces in Sirnak province, the provincial governor’s office said in a statement.
