Twenty-five Muslim Brotherhood members were arrested this week for allegedly distributed anti-government pamphlets and plotting to sabotage next month's legislative elections, police sources said Thursday.
The state security prosecutor on Thursday ordered them detained for two weeks, they added, amid a growing crackdown on the banned but partly tolerated Brotherhood ahead of the elections.
They were arrested Tuesday and Wednesday in the governorates of Ismailiya, Minufiya, Sharquiya and Kafr el-Sheikh in the Nile Delta, as well as in the Giza and Qalyubiya governorates around the capital Cairo, police said.
They were accused of "distributing anti-government pamphlets and "developing a plant to make the legislative elections fail by making propaganda against the authorities."
The three-stage election is due to start October 18, ending in mid-November, the first such poll in five years. The opposition accused the government of rigging the last election -- CAIRO(AFP)
