A prison riot that broke out early Saturday in the southern Brazilian state of Sao Paulo left two dead, prison authorities said.
The riot in the overcrowded prison at Taubate, in Sao Paulo's metropolitan region, erupted after a failed jail-break, with prisoners grabbing one police detective and four guards as hostages, prison workers added.
Judge Sueli Zeriak was in the prison Saturday trying to negotiate the release of the hostages and the transfer of the ringleaders to other jails.
