Two Gulf nationals died on Wednesday in a car crash on the Shaikh Isa bin Salman Highway in Manama, reported the Gulf Daily News.

Two other men, who were also Gulf Cooperation Council nationals, were treated at the Sulmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) after the accident.

One, who suffered broken ribs, was still in hospital last night. The other was in police custody.

The two men who died were in a Toyota, while the other two were driving separately in a Mitsubishi and a Ford, said a General Directorate of Traffic spokesman.

"One person, who caused the accident, was released from hospital on his demand after being treated," said the spokesman.

"He requested not to be hospitalized even though he was advised to remain in the SMC. He is now being detained by the police."

The driver of the Ford was on the wrong side of the highway when he collided with the others, according to the spokesman.

"The victims' car attempted to avoid the Ford, but was not successful, and was sent careering into the metal barrier," said the spokesman.

"The 43-year-old driver was thrown out of his car window, while his 35-year-old passenger was thrown through the car's wind-screen. They both died instantly."

The Ford then hit the Mitsubishi, which was travelling behind the Toyota.

"The driver of the Ford sustained bruises and a broken leg, while the driver of the Mitsubishi broke several ribs and is still in hospital."

Both the Ford driver and the Mitsubishi driver were found to be under the influence of alcohol, added the spokesman.

The hospitalized driver could face action once he is discharged, he said.

"We still don't know whether or not the other two men involved in the accident were under the influence or not," observed the spokesman.

"We will need to carry out special tests on the bodies to determine that as there are procedures which must be followed."

The investigation is continuing, he said – Albawaba.com
