A soldier and an Islamic militant have been killed and 12 people, half of them soldiers, injured in unrest in Algeria, newspaper reports said on Wednesday.

One soldier died and six of his colleagues were wounded Monday when a bomb exploded while they were on patrol in Ouled Chelli, in the Jijel area around 350 kilometers east of the capital, according to AFP.

Over a thousand soldiers under the command of Major-General Said Bey, the army commander in the Constantine region, are carrying out a massive manhunt for Islamic extremists in the area, newspapers reported.

The leader of one armed extremist group, Okba Doghmane, was killed Tuesday by security forces in Cherarba, a southwestern suburb of Algeria, where two people were injured in a bomb blast last weekend, the press reports said. (albawaba.com)
