More than two thirds of Germans think that the image of the United States has been badly damaged by the protracted legal battle for the White House, according to a survey published Saturday.

Out of 1,004 people interviewed earlier this week, 69 percent said that the battle -- which remains deadlocked nearly one-and-a-half weeks after election day -- has damaged the US's image.

Sixty-five percent of people interviewed also believed that there should be a rerun of elections in Florida.

The Forsa Institute, which carried out the survey, said that 52 percent of those polled said they would prefer to see the Democratic nominee Al Gore win. Only 24 percent were for Republican candidate George Bush, while the rest refused to say who they wanted in the White House -- BERLIN (AFP)
