The UAE Consumer Protection Society (CPS) will soon be empowered to represent consumers in courts in cases of compensation and other issues of consumer rights, Khaleej Times reported Saturday.

Hasan Marei Al Kathiri, deputy chairman of the society was quoted by the daily as saying that the law being drafted now would have provisions authorizing the society to appear before courts on behalf of consumers in cases of compensation claims for services and goods not meeting specifications.

The draft of the consumer protection law, according to the paper is getting final touches and is expected to be completed by end of this year to give the consumer the right to satisfy his basic needs and to protect him receiving poor quality or service which do not meet specifications.

There is a keen awareness of food safety among UAE consumers, mainly because of the critical need to handle and store food properly due to the harsh climate.
