The UAE allocated Sunday this year's quotas for garment exports to the US, by 15 percent against last year's, Khaleej Times reported.

Official sources were quoted by the daily as saying that "the reduced number did come as a surprise, and we have not received any explanation. We just do not understand the reason why the Ministry of Economy and Commerce has done so, given that last year they increased the quotas by about 7 to 10 percent."

Last year, UAE garment exports to the US were worth $400 million. But this year's quotas were greeted with relief by the industry. Many exporters had already sent their shipments, expecting the quotas to be announced by late November or early December, said the paper -- Albawaba.com
