The UAE Participates in the “Reflective Mirror” Exhibition in the USA

Bank Ki Moon, Secretary General of the United Nation is opening today ‘The Reflective Mirror’ art exhibition under the theme of “Expression of Womanhood” in the South Gallery, United Nations Head Quarters - New York City, USA. The exhibition is held Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum -President of Dubai Women Establishment,
Wife of H.H Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs-
from 22 Feb. to 15 March 2010, 10 am – 5 pm.

The exhibition is organized as a side event for the ECOSOC high-level event “Engaging Philanthropy to Promote Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment”. The exhibited art pieces, coordinated by The Art Centre of Dubai Ladies Club and United Nations Office for Partnership - United Nations Office of Exhibits, will showcase issues and concerns of women from varied cultural backgrounds, and act as testimonials to the empowerment of womanhood.

“I am honored to extend my patronage to this inspiring event which is clear evidence that art is a medium that transcends geographical and cultural boundaries, and plays an important role in communication changing ideas and ideals. Exhibitions such as this enable the international community to get a glimpse of the culture of the UAE and the true place of women within it, through the eyes of the Emirati woman. I am positive that this exhibition will serve as an inspiration to many other UAE women artists to develop their creative abilities in imaginative new ways” said H.H. Shaikha Manal.

The exhibition features the works of 120 women artists from different nationalities including 23 artists from United Arab Emirates. There are three main titles under which the unique art work was displayed; “Crossing the Threshold” featuring work by Dr. Najat makki, Mona Al Khaja, Salma Al Merri, Karima Shomeyli, “The Becoming”:  Gita Meh, Nivedita Saha, Reem Al Ghaith, Rebecca Rendell, Janet Belloto, Tonya Stewart, Jurgita Gerlikaite, Muna Abdulqader Al Ali, and “I Am a Woman”:  Maitha Hilal Bin Demithan, Maitha Huraiz Rashed Abdulla, Al Falasi, Meera Huraiz Rashed Abdulla Al Falasi, Afra Hilal Khalfan Bin Dhaher, Alaa Ibrahim Mohammad, Hayat Al Suwaidi, Zainab Yahya, Noor Abdallah, Noura Al Buqaish, Sarah Ayoub Agha, Lina Al Amoudi.

“The UAE has taken a leading role in creating a culture that supports and endorses women artists’ and their expression, making the UAE a hub for emerging artists in the Middle East. What we see today is a translation of the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai”, H.H. Sh. Manal added.

This exhibition sends out a very positive message while promoting a culture of respect and mutual understanding at the same time. Her Highness’s engagement serves as an inspiration to others and helps us get closer towards the United Nations commitment to achieve gender equality”, said Amir A. It is worth mentioning that the winning works from the Young Artist Award and the
Art Exchange Program will feature prominently as part of this exhibition.
