UAE President Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan urged US President George W. Bush "to take your time" before taking revenge for the terror attacks on the United States.
"I ask you to take your time and to be sure of the proof, so that the response to terrorism has the benefit of international legitimacy," he said in a telephone call, the official Kuwaiti news agency (KUNA) reported.
White House spokesman, Ari Flieischer, said that the conversation lasted about 10 minutes.
"The President thanked President Zayed for his public statements of support and for his willingness to help," he was quoted as saying.
Sheikh Zayed also discussed the matter with Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf in a telephone conversation, said AFP.
Sheikh Zayed said he backed a fight against terrorism, including Israeli attacks on Palestinians.
"The United Arab Emirates rejects terrorism in all its forms and wherever it occurs and believes that the fight against this phenomenon should also include the stopping of the Israeli attacks on the Palestinian people," Sheikh Zayed told Musharraf.
The agency said the two leaders also examined "the means of adopting a joint Islamic and international position to fight terrorism."
An official Emirati spokesman had said Saturday the UAE was "reviewing" its relations with Afghanistan in the light of the attacks in the US.
The UAE is one of only three countries, along with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, to recognize the Taliban militia, the hosts of bin Laden.
A senior US State Department official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Monday that "the UAE has given us indications that they will close down the Taliban office there, but we'll just have to wait and see." – Albawaba.com
