The UAE's Fujairah port will soon be expanded to attract more shipping lines in the near future, port officials told the Gulf News daily Saturday.

"We are now extending the quays by an additional 600 meters to take it to 1.5 kilometers of total quay length," an official told the paper, adding that the project is expected to be completed in 2002.

Meanwhile, freight through the port jumped 36 percent to more than 16.5 million tons last year, said the paper.

The Fujairah government held its first International Fujairah Bunkering and Fuel Oil Forum (FUJCON 2000) last November, highlighting the emirate's position as one of the world's three major bunkering centers -- Albawaba.com
