Yasser Al Siri, an Egyptian living in London, has been charged with conspiring to murder Afghan opposition commander Ahmad Shah Masood, who was killed last month, according to court documents lodged in London Tuesday.

According to the documents, cited by AFP, Siri is also charged with inviting support for the banned Gamm'a Al Islamiyya group, soliciting funds for the purpose of terrorism, stirring up racial hatred and making available property for the purposes of terrorism.

Siri, 38, is the director of the Islamic Observation Center in London, an Islamic news agency that mainly follows up issues related to human rights, arrests and torture of Islamists in prisons.

The decision to arrest and try Siri was hailed in Cairo, which has repeatedly called on UK and other EU states to extradite terrorist suspects who have sought asylum in Western countries.
