ALBAWABA -  Britain’s Labour PM Keir Starmer is rumored to resign on Monday, with Labour’s next top pick Andy Burnham believed to be his successor.

Starmer, who became Labour's PM in 2024, has since slowly lost the faith of his party; he is now preparing for a clean and neat exit to avoid chaos, ensuring that the succeeding PM will assume their role as head of British government comfortably.

Andy Burnham, Labour’s next pick for PM, has recently overcome fierce competition in the form of Reform UK as he fought for a parliamentary seat. Now that he has won it; he is backed by over 200 MPs to succeed Starmer; either through a negotiated transition or a leadership contest, according to Reuters.

Starmer, who is said to have reached the decision after deliberate conversations with his closest allies and inner circle, including with his wife, Victoria, at the PM’s Chequers country residence. A Labour peer close to Starmer said that he would not just “walk away” but that he would “arrange a deliberate slow march in good order, as a matter of duty and dignity"

"I think he sees the realities. Stopping ‘chaos’ (as he rightly put it) is now not possible by staying, so that only leaves one option. I think he has come to see it as the dutiful option to serve the country and the party." The Labour peer said.

Starmer is said to be “slowly going through things” with another peer saying: "There's a sadness about it all, of course, but sometimes there’s just an inevitability in politics and as Boris Johnson said, ‘When the herd moves it moves’.” Starmer is believed to announce his resignation, or a timeline to it, on Monday.
