ALBAWABA - The United Kingdom announced imposing 50 new sanctions on Russia to mark the second anniversary of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, which falls this weekend.

The sanctions, which aim to "diminish" Russian President Vladimir Putin's weapons stockpile, target munitions producers, electronics businesses, diamond and oil traffickers, according to the foreign office.

They also intend to cut off funding for Russia's war by restricting commerce in metals, diamonds, and energy, all of which are important sources of money for Russia, according to the ministry.

"Our international economic pressure means Russia cannot afford this illegal invasion," British Foreign Minister David Cameron said in a statement. "Our sanctions are starving Putin of the resources he desperately needs to fund his struggling war" Cameron continued.

Saturday is the second anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of its neighbor. According to the United Nations, the fighting has killed over 10,000 civilians and injured nearly 20,000 more.

"We shall not give up in the face of tyranny. We will continue to assist Ukraine in its fight for democracy, for as long as it takes."

According to the foreign office, the sanctions imposed on Thursday target 14 persons and businesses involved in the manufacture of armaments like as rocket launch systems, missiles, and explosives.

They include Sverdlov state-owned Enterprise, the largest company in Russia's ammunition business. A Turkish company that supplied electronics to the Russian military, three Chinese firms, and two Belarusian entities were all sanctioned.

Sanctions were also placed on oil trader Niels Troost, two Russian diamond firms, and five senior executives from Russia's largest manufacturers of copper, zinc, and steel, among others.

The United Kingdom has sanctioned 2,000 people, companies, and associations as part of its Russia sanctions program. On Wednesday, London revealed that it has slapped penalties on six people in charge of the Siberian jail cell where Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny died last week.
